Patrik Pietschmann - When the End Becomes the Beginning
Composed by Patrik Pietschmann
I dedicate this piece to everyone who feels like something important in their life has ended. Sometimes, an ending is just the start of something new.
As a child and teenager, I had to move many times. I often had to leave friends and familiar things behind. That was hard. But two things stayed with me the whole time: my love for music and my interest in computers. These gave me strength when things were difficult.
Later, during a very tough time in my life, I discovered the music of Hans Zimmer. It gave me new hope and the dream to become a film composer myself.
While studying music, I started some big projects - like a student film orchestra that has realized several studio projects. But the organization took so much time that I had little energy left for music. My studies also began to suffer. So I made a big decision: I stopped all my projects to focus on finishing my degree.
Still, I wanted to create something. So I started a new idea - a concert with several keyboard players, where each keyboard had an LED light strip to show what is being played. But the project failed. Too few tickets were sold, and I didn’t have the right people to help. I lost money and felt disappointed. All I had left were my arrangements and the LED prototype that I built and programmed for this project.
But then I had a new thought: maybe I was trying to do too much at once. Maybe I could start smaller. So I created this YouTube channel and began sharing my solo piano arrangements of film music. But it was more intended as a portfolio. And I did it mainly to distract myself from my previous failure, not because I expected much from it. I used my LED lights to make the piano keys glow and even made my own Synthesia-like software with visual effects.
That’s - very abbreviated - how my most successful video "Interstellar" was born. It now has more than 100 million views.
Back then, I thought everything is over and my energy is used up for any larger projects. But in reality it was the beginning of what later became my YouTube journey.
This original piece is about that moment. About how something good can come out of something that feels like a failure. It’s about hope and change. It’s also about today’s world. Right now, many people feel like the world is falling apart. But I believe that this time will pass - and something better will come. We just need to believe in new beginnings.
